This weekend, the city of Elkhart is set to host an engaging event for children interested in fishing. Organized by the Elkhart Environmental Center, Parks & Recreation, and Public Works Aquatic Biology Departments, the third annual free fishing clinic will take place at High Dive Park. Running from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., this event aims to introduce young participants aged 7 and above to essential aspects of fishing through interactive stations focused on stewardship, conservation, safety, knot tying, and basic tackle. Attendees who complete the program will receive a complimentary rod and reel while supplies last.
The excitement doesn’t end there; kids can practice their newly acquired skills by fishing in the pond or exploring live fish from the Elkhart River presented by local aquatic biologists. This initiative underscores the community's commitment to fostering environmental awareness and nurturing the next generation of anglers.
This year’s event builds on the success of previous editions, attracting more families eager to immerse their children in outdoor activities that promote sustainability and responsibility. The organizers have carefully designed each station to ensure that every child gains valuable knowledge about fishing practices.
Annie Klehfoth, the environmental projects coordinator at the Elkhart Environmental Center, highlighted the importance of such events during her appearance on WNDU 16 News Now at Noon. By participating in these hands-on workshops, children not only learn practical fishing techniques but also gain insights into preserving natural resources for future generations.
As the sun rises over High Dive Park this Saturday, young enthusiasts will embark on an adventure filled with learning and fun. With limited supplies of rods and reels available, early registration is encouraged to secure participation in this enriching experience. Beyond the clinic, families are invited to explore the beauty of nature within Elkhart, creating lasting memories together.
