Exciting Opportunity for Young Anglers at Thurmond Lake
2025-06-19

An engaging event designed to introduce young individuals to the joys of fishing is set to take place this Saturday at J. Strom Thurmond Lake, organized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This "Take Kids Fishing Day" welcomes participants aged 5 to 15 who register in advance. The first 150 registrants will receive a complimentary fishing rod and reel. All attendees must be accompanied by an adult, who can also join in the fishing if they possess a valid fishing license from Georgia or South Carolina. Notably, children 15 and under do not require a fishing license. The area will be stocked with catfish for the occasion.

The event will commence with check-in between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., followed by fishing activities from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Registration is crucial due to limited spots. Participants may secure their places either by scanning a QR code, visiting a dedicated website, or contacting the Thurmond Lake Project Office via phone. Lunch will be served to all registered participants, enhancing the experience further.

For safety, life jackets are strongly advised for children and weak swimmers near the water. While portable restrooms and drinking water will be available, attendees should bring personal items such as chairs, additional fishing gear, and sunscreen to ensure comfort throughout the day.

This initiative aims to foster a love for outdoor activities among younger generations while providing them with valuable skills and creating lasting memories. Through the support of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it offers an accessible entry point into the world of angling for families across the region.

As the sun rises over Thurmond Lake, young enthusiasts will gather to learn, connect, and enjoy a day filled with adventure. This gathering represents more than just fishing—it’s about community, education, and shared experiences that resonate long after the rods are put away.
