A major fundraising event for the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program is set to return after a hiatus, aiming to replenish resources that support hungry children in Lincoln County. The annual golf tournament, typically a sellout before the pandemic, will take place on June 29 at Inn of the Mountain Gods. This competition not only seeks players and sponsors but also aims to raise crucial funds for the nonprofit organization that provides weekend food supplies to local kids. Despite challenges such as fire cancellations and generous donations towards community disaster relief, the program continues its mission through private contributions.
Elizabeth Potter, founder of the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, expressed excitement over the tournament's revival. Known as the largest fundraising activity of the year, it had previously attracted full participation from golfers and sponsors alike. However, last year’s event was canceled due to wildfires. Instead of retaining sponsorships, the board decided to channel approximately $36,000 into aiding fire and flood victims within the community via the Community Foundation.
This year’s format includes a four-person best-ball competition with an entry fee of $130 per person or $500 for a team. Participants can pre-purchase mulligans and "miracle putts" ahead of the shotgun start scheduled for 1 p.m. Beyond the game itself, trophies and prizes await winners, while all golfers are invited to a post-tournament buffet dinner. Even non-golfers can join the festivities for $30 each, creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone interested in supporting this cause.
Potter emphasized the importance of this fundraiser given that the entire program operates solely on private donations. In the past fiscal year alone, the initiative distributed over 17,000 bags of food to children in need across Lincoln County. As a nonprofit organization without paid staff, it relies heavily on community generosity to maintain its annual budget of around $60,000. With the return of this significant event, hopes are high that the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program will secure sufficient funding to sustain its vital services. By engaging both avid golfers and compassionate supporters, the tournament promises to be a memorable occasion contributing positively to the well-being of local youth.
