2025-06-06

The 2025 spring sports season for Hen Hud High School was marked by a blend of achievements, challenges, and promising futures. From the flag football team's historic campaign to the softball squad's thrilling sectional final appearance, each sport showcased remarkable talent and determination. The Sailors' athletes also excelled off the field, earning academic accolades and setting the stage for future success at both the high school and collegiate levels.

Highlights from the Spring Sports Season

In a golden, sunlit May, Hen Hud’s varsity flag football team wrapped up its groundbreaking year with a hard-fought regional championship match against Owego Free Academy on May 31. Although they fell short with a score of 40-14, the Sailors celebrated an exceptional season, highlighted by a sectional title and a commendable 14-4 record. As the program moves forward, head coach Craig Solomon faces the task of rebuilding following the graduation of eight seniors, including standout players Lucy Mager and Sasha Lemus Villeda.

Shifting focus to softball, Hen Hud put up a valiant fight in the Section 1 Class A championship game on May 30. Despite a narrow 3-2 loss to Albertus Magnus, the Sailors demonstrated grit throughout the contest. Key contributions came from Emma Barbelet, Aneglina Carbone, Janae Walker, and others, who propelled Hen Hud to a respectable 15-7 overall record. Postseason recognition further underscored the team's accomplishments, as Barbelet and Walker were honored as All-Section selections.

On the track, Hen Hud athletes continued to shine during sectionals held on June 3. Chloe Howard secured victory in the girls' 1,500-meter race walk, while Maida Dapcevic triumphed in the Class B javelin throw. Meanwhile, Taiten Robinson placed fourth in the boys' pentathlon. Looking ahead, these competitors aim to excel at the Section 1 State Qualifiers scheduled for early June.

Beyond high school, former Sailors are making waves in collegiate athletics. Maddie Porter, a goalkeeper at Eastern Michigan University, earned Academic All-MAC honors for her impressive GPA and athletic performance. Similarly, Michael Gagliardi of Susquehanna University was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, reflecting his stellar academics and skills on the baseball diamond.

These successes illustrate the dedication and resilience of Hen Hud’s athletes, both in competition and academia.

From a journalist's perspective, this spring season exemplifies the essence of high school sports: fostering teamwork, discipline, and personal growth. Each athlete's journey—whether concluding their high school career or preparing for college—underscores the transformative power of athletics. Their stories inspire young athletes to strive not only for excellence but also for balance between sports and academics, ensuring lasting legacies both on and off the field.
