Listeria Outbreak Linked to Ready-to-Eat Pasta Raises Health Concerns
2025-06-19

A recent listeria outbreak tied to certain ready-to-eat pasta products has led to multiple fatalities and a pregnancy loss, prompting an urgent recall. The contamination involves chicken fettuccine Alfredo items distributed by FreshRealm and sold at major retailers like Walmart and Kroger. Authorities are advising consumers to either discard or return these potentially hazardous products. This development comes amid heightened scrutiny of food safety practices as investigations continue into the source of contamination.

Since early August 2024, seventeen individuals across thirteen states have fallen ill due to consuming the implicated pastas. Among them, three deaths and one fetal loss have been confirmed. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a warning emphasizing that some affected products might still reside in household refrigerators or freezers. These products, available in the refrigerated sections of stores and designed for microwaving, include various sizes and brands such as Marketside and Home Chef. Notably, frozen meals remain unaffected by this recall.

Health experts warn that listeriosis poses severe risks particularly to older adults, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems. Symptoms can range from fever and muscle pain to more critical manifestations like headaches, neck stiffness, confusion, and seizures, sometimes preceded by gastrointestinal issues.

FreshRealm, which operates facilities in California, Georgia, and Indiana, acknowledged potential adulteration involving an outbreak strain within their chicken fettuccine Alfredo offerings. Products manufactured prior to June 17 are under scrutiny, leading to widespread concern over public health implications. Regulatory bodies including the FDA and FSIS are collaborating closely with the CDC to ascertain the root cause of contamination and implement necessary measures to safeguard consumer well-being.

In light of these developments, authorities urge vigilance among shoppers regarding the storage and consumption of recalled items. Ongoing efforts aim to identify precise contamination origins while reinforcing protocols to prevent future outbreaks. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed through official updates and adhere strictly to disposal or return guidelines for implicated goods.
