Massachusetts Celebrates Youth Engagement in Boating and Fishing
2025-06-07

An exciting initiative to foster young people's interest in water-based activities has been officially recognized by the highest authorities in Massachusetts. Governor Maura Healey, alongside Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, declared an annual event known as KIDS Boating and Fishing Week, set to take place from June 7th to 15th, 2025. This week-long celebration aims to inspire and engage youth across the state through a series of boating and fishing events. Organized under the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association (MMTA), this marks the seventh year of promoting these activities, with seven registered events already planned for participation.

This special week aligns perfectly with other national observances such as Great Outdoors Month and National Fishing and Boating Week. The main objective is not only to showcase what the boating and fishing industries offer but also to introduce children to the joys of being on the water. Notably, around 70 percent of adult boaters began their journey during childhood, emphasizing the importance of early exposure. A significant highlight this year includes information sessions about the Hanson Milone Safe Boating bill, recently enacted by Governor Healey. Starting April 2026, this law will mandate boating licenses for all operators within the state, enhancing safety standards.

The upcoming KIDS Boating and Fishing Week promises engaging activities designed to educate and entertain young participants. Events range from boating classes at various locations like Marine Max Boston and Danvers, to interactive experiences such as Touch a Boat Day in Nantucket. Additionally, fishing derbies in Foxboro and Buzzards Bay provide opportunities for hands-on learning and fun. Through collaboration, communication, and education, these initiatives aim to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for aquatic activities among the youth, paving the way for future industry growth and responsible stewardship of marine resources.
