Mitsubishi Unveils New Seven-Seater Destinator SUV, Exclusively for Non-U.S. Markets

A new contender in the SUV segment, the Mitsubishi Destinator, has made its global debut, designed to cater to the demands of several international markets. This seven-passenger vehicle, assembled in Indonesia, is primarily aimed at consumers in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Notably, despite its appeal as a family utility vehicle, Mitsubishi has no intentions of bringing the Destinator to the North American market, nor even to Australia, a long-standing key market for the brand, thus signaling a distinct regional strategy for its product lineup.

Delving into the specifications, the Destinator is built with practicality and robustness in mind, tailored for diverse road conditions. Measuring 184.2 inches in length, 72.4 inches in width, and 70 inches in height, its dimensions are comparable to the Mitsubishi Outlander, yet it boasts a longer wheelbase at 110.8 inches, suggesting potentially more accommodating third-row seating than its counterpart. Powering this new SUV is a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and an all-wheel-drive system featuring Mitsubishi's Active Yaw Control. Its robust suspension system, comprising MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion-beam rear, along with a significant 8.4 inches of ground clearance, emphasizes its capability to navigate challenging terrain, a crucial aspect for its intended markets. Inside, the Destinator offers a modern experience with a panoramic sunroof, 64-color ambient lighting, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and an eight-speaker Yamaha audio system. While the Destinator will not be available in the U.S., Mitsubishi's North American portfolio currently features the Outlander, Outlander Sport, and Eclipse Cross. The brand has, however, confirmed plans to introduce a new, fully electric model in North America by summer 2026, which will be based on the 2026 Nissan LEAF, leveraging its alliance partnership.
