An iconic hue takes center stage in the new exhibition "Horizons/Red," paying homage to the legendary color that has become synonymous with Valentino Garavani's illustrious career. The vibrant crimson, known as 'Valentino Red,' is showcased at PM23, a cultural hub recently established by the Fondazione Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti in Rome's Piazza Mignanelli. This location holds special significance as it lies close to where Garavani launched his first collection over six decades ago.
Through an immersive journey across six meticulously curated rooms, the exhibition delves into five thematic explorations: defining beauty, identity, emotional landscapes, surface treatment, and dreamlike surfaces. On display are fifty of Valentino’s most celebrated designs from 1959 to 2008, alongside thirty artworks predominantly featuring shades of red. These creations spark meaningful dialogues between fashion and art, creating a harmonious blend of creativity and elegance. A tulle haute couture gown from 1959 shares space with Cy Twombly’s abstract masterpiece, while other gowns converse with works by renowned artists such as Clyfford Still, Francis Bacon, and Louise Bourgeois.
Inspiration transcends generations, fostering connections through shared visions of beauty. For Giancarlo Giammetti, Valentino's lifelong partner, this exhibition represents more than just nostalgia—it serves as a source of inspiration for future endeavors. Curated by Pamela Golbin, who previously helmed the acclaimed "Valentino: Themes and Variations" exhibit in 2008, the presentation emphasizes authenticity rather than forced narratives. By focusing on timeless aesthetics, the exhibition highlights how art and fashion can coexist without artificial constraints. At its core lies the belief that beauty inspires further beauty, encouraging emerging talents to embrace curiosity and fearlessness in their creative pursuits.
This exhibition not only celebrates Valentino’s enduring legacy but also underscores the transformative power of artistic expression. It invites viewers to reflect on the universal language of beauty and its ability to unite diverse disciplines. As we look toward the future, the hope remains that young creators will draw strength from these stories, finding courage to share their own unique perspectives. Through initiatives like "Horizons/Red," the foundation aims to foster a community rooted in inspiration and innovation, ensuring that the spirit of creativity continues to thrive.
