Virtual Reality Gaming Studio Thrives Amid Industry Challenges
2025-06-20

In the heart of south Sarasota County, a software development studio is revolutionizing virtual reality (VR) gaming while overcoming significant industry hurdles. Combat Waffle Studios, founded in 2022 by Scott Albright, has quickly become a powerhouse in the VR gaming world. The company offers survival-themed games such as Ghosts of Tabor, Grim, and Silent North, available on platforms like Steam VR, Meta Quest, and Pico. Despite challenges facing the broader gaming industry, including layoffs and declining sales, Combat Waffle continues to expand its payroll and user base. Notably, Ghosts of Tabor surpassed one million users just months after its release in March 2023 and grossed over $30 million by May. With two new games slated for release in late 2026 and 2027, the company remains committed to innovation and growth.

The journey of Combat Waffle Studios began with its founder's unique background. Scott Albright, a former U.S. Army soldier who sustained injuries during his four-year overseas deployment, transitioned into talent agency work before founding the studio. His passion for competitive VR gaming inspired him to create what he envisioned as the ultimate VR experience. Recognizing a gap in the market for high-quality survival games, Albright secured initial funding from an investor, allowing him to develop Ghosts of Tabor without relinquishing control of his company. This strategic decision positioned Combat Waffle for rapid success, leading to its current status as a leader in VR gaming.

As demand for Combat Waffle's products surged, so did the need for expanded facilities. In February, the company relocated from its original 7,000-square-foot space to a sprawling 23,349-square-foot building in Nokomis. Formerly home to drinkware manufacturer Tervis, the new location provides ample power, parking, and amenities necessary to support the growing team. Employees now enjoy privacy pods, an outdoor courtyard, an indoor basketball area, and a green room for video production. These enhancements reflect Albright's commitment to fostering a creative and supportive work environment.

Despite the company's impressive growth, the VR gaming industry faces considerable challenges. Summer months often bring reduced sales due to warmer weather encouraging outdoor activities. Additionally, widespread cheating issues plague both VR and traditional gaming communities. Combat Waffle Studios addresses these concerns head-on by hiring experts once known for exploiting game vulnerabilities. Their innovative anti-cheat solution, Tomahawk, ensures fair play for all participants. Plans are underway to extend this technology to other studios, further solidifying Combat Waffle's role as a pioneer in ethical gaming practices.

Looking ahead, Combat Waffle Studios anticipates continued expansion. By the second quarter of 2026, the company aims to double its workforce, reaching 100 employees. This growth will fuel the development of upcoming titles, ensuring fans remain engaged with fresh content. As Scott Albright navigates the complexities of modern gaming, his vision for immersive, equitable experiences continues to inspire both players and industry peers alike.
