MUSC Extends Free Meal Initiative to Combat Child Hunger in Two New Counties
2025-06-05

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has announced an expansion of its "Kids Eat Free" program, bringing relief to Chester and Lancaster Counties. This initiative aims to address food insecurity among children during the summer months when school meals are unavailable. Established in 2015, the program offers nutritious meals to children under 18 years old without any financial obligation or documentation required. Last year, MUSC served over 54,000 meals through this effort, highlighting its growing importance across the state. The timing of this expansion aligns with increasing challenges faced by local food pantries due to recent USDA funding cuts.

As part of its mission to support vulnerable communities, MUSC's "Kids Eat Free" program will now serve children in two additional counties starting June 15. According to Richard Warrin, Chief Operating Officer at MUSC Health Chester Medical Center, ensuring that children receive nourishing meals while out of school is a priority for the organization. The program operates on weekdays throughout the summer, providing free meals to minors without requiring proof of financial need. However, guardians must accompany their children to the designated locations, which do not accommodate group requests such as sports teams or daycare centers.

The initiative addresses a critical gap in nutrition support during the summer break, a period when many families struggle to provide consistent meals. Local pantry leaders have expressed concern about dwindling supplies following recent federal budget adjustments, estimating costs of up to $9,000 per month to replenish depleted inventories. By adopting a no-questions-asked policy, MUSC aims to eliminate potential barriers preventing families from accessing necessary resources.

Two new pickup sites have been established: the Lancaster Medical Center located at 800 W. Meeting St., serving meals between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the Chester Medical Center at 1 Medical Park Dr., operating from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. These locations offer convenient access points for families seeking nutritional assistance during the program's operational hours.

In response to the pressing issue of child hunger, MUSC continues to expand its outreach efforts, demonstrating a commitment to community well-being. Through partnerships and volunteer engagement, the program fosters collaboration to enhance food security in affected areas. Those interested in contributing to these efforts can reach out to Laura Nance via email or donate directly to the Fort Lawn Community Center, supporting ongoing initiatives aimed at alleviating food shortages.
